About Cycle Through America
Don Berens, a parishioner at St. Pius X in Loudonville, will be embarking on a bicycling trip across America. What makes Don’s cycling adventure even more amazing is that he suggested it could ultimately benefit the Emergency Assistance Program of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany.
Don’s journey will begin on May 11th when he ceremonially dips his rear tire in the Pacific Ocean near Los Angeles. He will then travel nearly 3,400 miles to the Boston area and dip his front tire in the Atlantic Ocean.
Don’s goal is to bike through 13 states in 48 days; our goal is to collectively raise $100 for every mile Don bikes. Our assurance is that 100% of the funds collected will be used to fund the Emergency Assistance Program. This is a great project for parishes, schools, businesses and individuals to participate in as all money raised will help our community.
Don explains his commitment to the mission of Catholic Charities by saying, “My goal is to have my ride serve as a fundraiser for the Emergency Assistance Program at Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany, New York. The correlation between Catholic Charities Emergency Assistance and cross country cycling is this: no matter how fit and well prepared we are, we sometimes have emergencies on the road. Water in the desert, a flat tire after you’ve used all the spare tubes you bought, directions when you’re lost or first aid when you’re hurt. If you’ve biked long enough you can easily recall a time where a Good Samaritan has bailed you out of a jam. I feel it only appropriate that this trip can raise money for others who are in need of a hand.”
The heart and history of Catholic Charities lies in its concern for and response to persons in greatest need. Let’s rally as a community and join in on this remarkable journey by pledging funds to help those less fortunate.
